Icelandic Independence Day in Winnipeg, June 17 2011

Leif Norman

The Jόn Sigurdsson statue in Winnipeg will be the place to be on June 17th! Besides celebrating Iceland’s Independence, Icelanders worldwide will recognize the 200th anniversary of Jόn Sigurdsson’s birth. Mr. Sigurdsson was born on June 17, 1811 and is recognized as the first Icelandic patriot to petition for independence from Denmark. When independence was finally granted in 1944, his birthday was selected as the day on which to celebrate Iceland’s freedom.”
