TOWARD LIGHT – A Tribute to Rachel Browne is a loving homage to our founder and this icon of Canadian modern dance. This show is also the launching platform for the Trust that will preserve and disseminate her legacy.
These performances will highlight a range of Rachel’s work including a short excerpt from Odetta’s Songs and Dances (1964) to Rachel’s most recent and very poignant work Momentum (2012). As reflected in Rachel’s latter works, dancers from all stages of their professional careers will perform the nine works/excerpts programmed. Thirteen seasoned professionals from WCD and Winnipeg’s independent dance community come together for a tribute show that will be a truly fitting commencement for The Rachel Browne Trust.
Because of Rachel’s very important work with emerging professionals it was felt that the launch needed to also include students. The tribute will be performed by a total of twenty one dancers in Winnipeg and Vancouver and by twenty five dancers in Toronto. The number of dancers participating is a reflection of the interest by the professional training programs across Canada in programming Rachel’s dances.
