Director Brenda McLean, Sessional Instructor in the University of Manitoba’s, Theatre Program invites you to the Black Hole Theatre’s final performance of their 2010/2011 season. This production of The House of Bernarda Alba, combines Live Spanish Guitar Music, Flamenco Dance, and the Poetic Language of the Country of Spain. Lively, passionate, and intensely dramatic; come experience the tragic story of Bernarda Alba’s daughters who try at all costs to free themselves from the tyranny of their mother and the Catholic Church. Written by Federico Garcia Lorca in 1936; Spanish playwright, poet, and accomplished pianist. Lorca studied at the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid where he befriended Composer Manuel de Falla, Filmmaker Luis Bunuel and Painter Salvador Dali; and many other creative artists who were, or would become, influential across Spain.

Seen as a record of modern Spanish life, Lorca calls the play a photographic document of his times and subtitled it as, “a drama about women in the villages of Spain”, in 1936. The character of Adela, written to be a projection of Lorca himself, tries desperately to separate herself from the restraints of her life by secretly having an affair with a man; her words so powerfully reveal this:
“Save your advice, It’s already too late. For I’d leap not over you, just a servant, but over my mother to put out this fire I feel in my legs and my mouth.” (Adela, The Hous of Bernarda Alba)
Director Brenda McLean is also Co-Artistic Director of the independent theatre company, Theatre Incarnate. Other directing and creation work include: Dionysus is Getting Impatient, Far Away, Guernica, Verge-In, Arcadia, Beet, and The Hairy Ape.
