Spell to Bring Lost Creatures Home with Boyle and Fellows
at the Winnipeg Art Gallery
“Enjoy an evening of visual art and music collaboration when the Winnipeg Art Gallery and the West End Cultural Centre co-host Spell to Bring Lost Creatures Home with artist Shary Boyle and songwriter Christine Fellows. The duo will perform February 21 at the WAG for one night only following their tour across the Northwest Territories.
Spell to Bring Lost Creatures Home is an intimate new work by Boyle and Fellows, which premiered in Canada’s north in October. This hand-crafted spectacle bravely explores distance and alienation, childhood and aging, imagination and resilience in the face of a changing, challenging landscape.
Presented as a series of vignettes seen through a window, Spell to Bring Lost Creatures Home invites audiences on a mysterious, and immersive journey through a richly described visual and aural landscape. Part ritual and part myth, Boyle and Fellows use sound, lyric, image and light to tell stories that reconnect us with a sense of shared history and common humanity. The November 14 concert is a homecoming for Fellows, who lives in Winnipeg.
Collaborating since 2005, Boyle and Fellows have presented wildly inventive performances from Woody Point, Newfoundland to Paris, France. They weave together vivid narratives using minimalist, low-fi means: Boyle’s stunning, hand-animated artwork created and projected on an old-fashioned overhead projector, and Fellows’ intricately detailed songs and direct vocals, backed alternately by piano and ukulele.
Performed in the WAG’s Muriel Richardson Auditorium (300 Memorial Blvd), the concert starts at 8:00pm and will be followed by an artist talk and Q&A with the artists. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door the night of the event. Tickets for Nov 15 will be honoured on Feb 21. If you seek a refund, please return to place of purchase.” from WAG.ca
