Winnipeg International Writers Festival, Thin Air, School Stage, Marty Chan, Sept 22 2011

THIN AIR

In September each year, Winnipeg welcomes writers from Canada and around the world for a week of readings, lectures, interviews, conversations, book launches, and other events. That week of literary feasting—which reaches out into the rural areas of the province as well—is THIN AIR, the Winnipeg International Writers Festival. With programming for adults and children, in English and French, THIN AIR is an infusion of energy into the thriving literary culture of this city.

SCHOOL STAGE: Marty Chan

Manitoba Theatre for Young People

Marty Chan has a knack for creating playful stories that also model the value of good citizenship. A Close Shave, the first novel in a new series, introduces readers to Barnabas Bigfoot, a sasquatch with embarrassingly small feet.

Marty Chan has made a name for himself as a playwright, a TV screenwriter, and YA novelist. His wildly successful mystery series includes The Mystery of the Frozen Brains, which won the City of Edmonton Book Aware, and last year’s The Mystery of the Cyber Bully. This year, he launches A Close Shave (Thistledown), the first in a new series featuring Barnabas Bigfoot, a sasquatch with embarrassingly small feet. His hit play, The Forbidden Phoenix (Playwrights Canada) ran at MTYP in 2010. Chan lives in Edmonton where he is currently the writer-in-residence at the Edmonton Public Library.
