Brent Lott danced for Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers (WCD) under the direction of Tom Stroud form 1999 to 2004. During this time he was also provided the opportunity to become Tom Stroud’s assistant. Brent was appointed the Artistic Director of WCD in June of 2005 when Mr. Stroud left the company to pursue his first love, theatre.
Brent received his early training at the professional programs of both the RWB and The School of Contemporary Dancers (SCD). After graduating from SCD in 1990 Brent began his professional dance career with Dance Collective followed by Ruth Cansfield Dance. Throughout his years of performing he has worked for a myriad of choreographers including Tedd Robinson, Julia Sasso, Davida Monk, Joe Laughlin, Yvonne Coutts, Harold Rheaume, Lee Eisler, Rachel Browne, Karen Kuzak, Lesandra Dodson, Sharon Moore, Constance Cook, Christina Medina and Tom Stroud.
As a choreographer, Brent has been actively creating for over a decade. His 2008 work STRUCK, set on WCD dancers, was called ‘a work of mystery by beauty’ by the Globe and Mail dance reviewer Paula Citron. His 2011 contribution to the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival, Bash on Regardless, was given 5 stars by Winnipeg Free Press reviewer Alison Mayes and refered to as ‘ …an extraordinary heart-stopping fusion of movement and text.’ His other full length choreographic endeavours include Coming in to Autumn with actor Naomi Cooke, His Banner Over Me with clarinettist Lori Freedman and a co-production with Christina Medina entitled as long as now. Brent’s work also includes directing and choreographing Winn Wells’ play Gertrude Stein and a Companion, which toured both Canada and England. 97 Positions of the Heart, his latest full length work co-created with poet Jaik Josephson, was performed at the 2012 Canadian Dance Festival.
As a guest teacher Brent has taught at numerous university and professional training programs across Canada and is a member of the faculty of the Professional Program of SCD and a past faculty member of the Professional Program of RWB. Brent is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Dancer Transition Resource Centre, a national organization whose mandate is to help dancers make the necessary transitions into, within, and from professional performing careers.
