The third annual dig! magazine Rent Party takes over The Park Theatre on Thursday, November 15. Featuring live jazz and fantastic prizes, the night’s proceeds will go towards funding Winnipeg’s one-and-only jazz publication, now in its NINTH year!
Editor Steve Kirby thinks of dig! as “the eyes, ears, soul and voice of the community,” and he’s committed to keeping it free and readily accessible to the wider public. “Jazz is experiencing a renaissance here in Winnipeg,” he says, “and that’s partly because we have an interested and informed audience that really appreciates the music.”
The centerpiece of the Rent Party is the release of Stepchild, the brand new CD by the Northern Prairie Jazz Ensemble, a group made up of past and present members of the University of Manitoba Jazz Studies faculty.
The CD, recorded in June 2011 at Musirex Studios in Winnipeg, features Steve and Anna-Lisa Kirby, Larry Roy, Will Bonness, Quincy Davis, Derrick Gardner, George Colligan and Jimmy Greene. The recording features original compositions by Bonness, Kirby, Greene and Davis, as well as arrangements of tunes by Cole Porter, Oliver Nelson, Sting, and more. For the night’s performance, the band will consist of Steve and Anna-Lisa Kirby, Larry Roy, Will Bonness, Quincy Davis, Derrick Gardner and Craig Bailey.
Also on stage that night will be some of the top U of M Jazz Studies alumni out making it happen right now on the jazz scene. The Alumni All-Stars include Heitha Forsyth, Amber Epp, Erin Propp, Will Bonness, Karl Kohut, Curtis Nowosad, Lucas Sader, Simon Christie, Neil Watson and Shannon Kristjanson.
Also on the Rent Party bill is Quincy Davis & Promise, an ensemble of current U of M Jazz students hand-picked by the professor himself. Promise includes Joanna Majoko, Alex Massa, Eric Bachman, Niall Bakkestad-Lagare, Carter Graham, Jocelyn Goertzen and Lindsay Woolgar.
A rent party pays the proverbial landlord, so not only will you experience the best jazz this city has to offer, you’ll also be supporting dig! magazine as it continues to share the news–for free–in the Jazz Capital of Canada!
Tickets for both go on sale Friday, September 14 at 10 AM. Tickets will be available at jazzwinnipeg.com, by phone at 989-4656 or in person the Jazz Winnipeg office (007-100 Arthur St.) and the Park Theatre.
For this gig, the musicians allowed me to get right up on stage with them while they played so I could get some better images!
