Construction at Portage Place : April 2, 2026

Portage Place in downtown Winnipeg is undergoing a massive $650-million redevelopment by True North Real Estate Development, transforming the 1987 mall into a mixed-use hub. The project, aiming for 2028 completion, includes a new health-care center and 15-story residential tower with affordable housing. Deconstruction of the existing structure is currently underway.

  • Transformation: The former shopping center is being converted into a “Healthcare Centre of Excellence” and residential units.
  • Construction Timeline: Deconstruction is currently in progress, with plans for the health tower to begin, followed by a 15-story residential tower. The project is slated for completion by 2028.
  • Goal: The project aims to revitalize downtown Winnipeg by increasing residential density and providing modern facilities.
  • Interim Changes: The skate park is being relocated to 323 Portage Avenue.
  • Opened: September 17, 1987, as a major downtown shopping center.
  • Location: 393 Portage Avenue, spanning three city blocks.
  • Features: Included over 100 shops, restaurants, the Prairie Theatre Exchange, (which is still there!) and skywalk access to the Canada Life Centre.
